작가노트_

나의 작업은 3D 프린터가 가지는 생산방식에 표현 요소인 테셀레이션을 적용하여 의자와 장신구를 제작하는 것이다. 작업에 적용된 테셀레이션이 미술 장르의 하나로 인정받은 것은 20세기의 일이지만, 실상 미술, 건축 등에 이용된 것은 훨씬 오래전인 기원전부터이다. 이집트, 페르시아, 그리스, 로마 등 서양뿐만 아니라, 중국, 한국, 일본 등 동양의 각종 장식품에서 테셀레이션을 이용한 문양이 발견된다. 우리 주변에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 거리의 보도블록, 타일, 조각보 등도 모두 테셀레이션의 확장이라 할 수 있다. 의자와 장신구라는 사물이 가져야 하는 기능과 기원전부터 사용된 테셀레이션의 아름다움, 현대의 기술이라고 대표할 수 있는 3D 프린팅 생산방식을 이용하여 ‘사물의 기능과 아름다움의 공존’에 대한 이해를 돕고 현대기술의 확장을 통한 새로운 사물의 창조를 보여주려 한다.

작업의 기초가 되는 것은 현재까지 이어지는 금속공예 기술과 재료의 원칙들을 진보적 디자인과 생산방식에 결합하는 것이다. 그 뒤 작업은 공간과 재료, 나 자신에 대한 의식이나 관념 사이에서 새로운 것을 발견하면서, 나만의 감정을 직관적으로 표현하는 것이다.

Artist’s Note_

My work uses the creation method of 3D printing and applies the expressive element of tessellation to create stools and jewellery. The tessellation that is exercised on my work was only acknowledged as an art genre in the 20th century but was actually used in art and architecture much before that, since before Christ. Tessellated patterns can be found not only in Egypt, Persia, Greece, and Rome but also in various ornaments of the East such as China, Korea, and Japan. The pavement blocks that we can easily find in our midst or tiles, patchwork are all extensions of tessellation. I intend to offer a look into the ‘coexistence of function and beauty of objects’ and create new objects by way of expansion of modern technology through the functions that stools and jewellery have along with the beauty of tessellation, which has been used since before Christ, and also the production method of 3D printing, which is a wholly modern technology.

The basis of my work is to use the technology of metalwork which has been continued until now along with the principles of the materials and combining these with progressive design and production method. Afterward, my work is to discover new things among the space and material, the consciousness or sense of self and to intuitively express my own distinct emotions.
